Female sexual dysfunction can be psychological or physical (organic). Psychological causes can be best evaluated and treated by psychologists or psychiatrists or psychotherapists. Often, female sexual dysfunction can be mixture of psychological and physical.

Psychological causes of female sexually dysfunction include depression, anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, and others such as feeling guilty about having pleasure.

Physical causes include internal or external anatomical or physiological problem of the female genitalia. Simple things such as episiotomy scars, vaginal dryness, or narrowness of the vaginal opening can cause pain during intercourse. Female hormone deficiency of estrogen, progesterone or testosterone plays a large role in menopausal women. Other medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorder, or arthritis can affect pleasure perception of intercourse. Certain medications such as blood pressure medications or antidepressants reduce libido and cause difficulty reaching orgasm.

The detailed and in depth knowledge of psychological and physiological causes of female sexual dysfunction cannot be contained in a limited space. The treatment of various causes of female sexual dysfunction can only be optimized by multi-disciplinary approach of many specialists.

Vaginal Rejuvenation by Radiofrequency (ThermiVa):

This procedure is effective in rejuvenating the inside and outside of the genitalia. The vaginal mucosa rejuvenation can result in tightening of the vagina and increases the sexual stimulation, both for female and her partner.  Collagen production in the external genitalia can improve sagging vulva and labia. About 50 % of postmenopausal women and 15 % of premenopausal women experience symptoms associated with vulvovaginal atrophy, and many women have benefitted by treatment with Radiofrequency device such as ThermiVa.  This treatment can be indicated for women with vulvar and vaginal atrophy symptoms, women with inadequate response to estrogen therapy, women who seek an alternative to hormonal therapy, or for those women female hormone therapy is contraindicated.

 PRP vaginal injection:

PRP vaginal injection can produce greater arousal from clitoral stimulation, a tighter vaginal opening, stronger orgasm, decreased pain during intercourse, and increased vaginal lubrication.

What is Thermiva?

Thermiva is a Radiofrequency device cleared by USA FDA for use in non-surgical procedures for improvement of genitourinary function of women. The Thermiva is intended to be used in in-office treatments using temperature-controlled Radiofrequencyenergy to gently heat tissue.

What is Radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency is the oscillation rate of an alternating electric current or voltage or of a magnetic, electric or electromagnetic field or mechanical system in the frequency range from around twenty thousand times per second to around three hundred billion times per second. Radiofrequency energy generates heat and results electrocoagulation resulting in collagen stimulation.

How does the Thermiva work?

The heat energy generated by the Radiofrequency generator (Themiva device) is delivered via Thermiva Hand Piece. This hand piece has a smooth metal square on the bottom, and this heats the tissue via emission of radiofrequency energy. The temperature of the tissue in contact with the metal tip becomes about 35-47 degrees Celsius. At this range of temperature there is no actual burning of the tissue. The usual temperature of bath water is 32-47 degree in Celsius. So the temperature of the maximum Thermiva heated area is not higher than your hot bathwater temperature. However due to the property of Radiofrequency, electrocoagulation, the collagen production is stimulated. Therefore the vaginal tissue becomes younger so to speak, more plump and elastic and moisturized.

What is expected during the Thermiva procedure?

A qualified medical provider will examine your genital area for appropriateness of the procedure.

The entire treatment time will last usually 30-45 minutes. The inside vaginal tissue will receive the treatment for about 20 minutes. The external area (labia and vulva, clitoris area and the periurethral area) will receive the treatment for about 10-15 minutes. You will be lying down comfortably with stirrups supporting your legs entire time.

There is no pain involved with this procedure when done properly. You may feel some heat and definitely warmth at the treatment area.

Who will benefit from Thermiva:

Women who feel that their intimate wellness has changed since childbirth. Thermiva is recommended 3-6 months after child birth to restore the vaginal tightness.

Women around and after menopause typically has decreased female hormone to support the genitourinary functions. She may feel decreased libido, vaginal dryness, decrease orgasm and painful sex. Thermiva can help in all of these areas. She can feel the difference as early as within one week after the treatment.

Women who want to restore their youthful tight external genitalia appearance will be surprised that Thermiva can do this without surgery and with very little discomfort and no down time.

Women who developed urinary incontinence or urinary frequency due to loosened pelvic floor can benefit from Thermiva. Many women report less nocturnal and daytime urination with Thermiva treatment that has changed their quality of life and functional capacity.

What my patient’s are saying:

“I feel very confident… I love it, it really helped. I am too shy to talk about it, but I am a fan of Thermiva.”

“I loved the result I got. So I bought the device, confident that everyone will love Thermiva.” – Dr. Laura Cho

“The procedure was so easy. I did not have any pain and I actually relaxed during the entire procedure.”

What is the result of a treatment with Thermiva?

The treated vaginal tissue will have more collagen. Collagen makes vaginal tissue plump and elastic, vaginal/vulva dryness less, and outer appearance of the labia and vulva less sagging. The treatment with Thermiva can also improve mild to moderate stress incontinence due to the fact that periurethral tissue will become plumper and firm, which results in tighter closing of the urethra. The treatment with Thermiva will also enhance sexual function due to generating vaginal tissue that is more capable of lubricating and responding to sexual stimulation.

Will there be any down time?

Thermiva is non-invasive and requires no anesthesia. There is no down time for daily activities. You may resume your exercise or any routine activities immediately. However pelvic rest of 1-3 days maybe advised based on your comfort level.
